Pleasantly surprising

Having seen this at the weekend I was left pleasantly surprised by a film I thought would be another attempt at keeping the Frankenstein narrative alive. I went into the cinema with quite low expectations as I’ve never been a massive fan of anything Frankenstein. The films had its fair share of criticism since its release in late November and its fair to say The Guardian were fans with their review of the film. However I think the film deserves more credit than it’s got, Victor Frankenstein offers a unique spin to the story, with the focus more on Igor than Frankenstein himself. This perspective gave the plot a new feel to it and Igor, played by Daniel Radcliffe, was a much more complex and exciting character to watch.

It seems the film got some rather mixed reviews.

Some people loved it…

Some people not so much…

Strange Casting?

When I first saw the casting for the film the roles seemed a bit odd and while it is and impressive cast list James McAvoy would not have been my first choice to play such a powerful character as Victor Frankenstein, however im glad he did as he brought the role to life with a passionate performance. Also worth a shout was Sherlocks Andrew Scott who we see play Inspector Turpin, the cast for this film was really the only thing that drew me to it and it reflects the modern spin that screen writer Max Landis puts on the old tale.

Frankenstein teaches us about the dangers of science

In an interview with biography.com Radcliffe told how the new Frankenstein resonates with life today and how advancements in science can be both a gift and a disaster. It certainly brings a lot to the table in terms of its original spin on things and while I’m far from an expert on Frankenstein it felt like a completely fresh narrative from what id seen before. The relationship between Frankenstein and Igor was another unique aspect of the film with neither character acting passively, this gave for an exciting dynamic between the two. The relationship led to some really intense scenes and dialogues between the two. I think casting Radcliffe as Igor helped with this as I’m pretty sure no one can hate the face of Harry Potter.

Definitely worth a watch

This film really is worth a watch, I feel as if I enjoyed it more not knowing a lot about Frankenstein and having not seen a lot of the films so I didn’t go into the cinema already having preconceptions about it, so If you have seen any of the others try to keep an open mind you’ll enjoy it more!

Get the Best deal you can!

I put together a little graph to show you how you can get the best value but personally I’d recommend AMC cinemas if you’re going to watch this film, or any film really. Tickets are cheap and the cinemas are good quality.
